Can I fizz liquids other than water in my Sodastream?

If you already own a Sodastream – or you’re looking to purchase one but aren’t quite sure of their capabilities, here we answer the one main difference the MIX machine has to all of our other machines.

For the past century, Sodastream machines have worked with the same principle: fill with tap water, fizz until fizzy, THEN add your syrup. This is because when you add CO2 to plain water, it dissolves quickly and leaves it fizzy. But when you add sugar or sweeteners to water and then add CO2, it means the CO2 doesn’t dissolve as easily in the water and therefore rather than dissolving, it causes rapid foam expansion and tries to escape. This causes an ‘explosion’ (which is really a rapid foam expansion under pressure) - and a mess! The solution to this for most drinks is solved by fizzing just the water and then adding the syrups. However, we had a lot of requests to fizz liquids other than water such as juice and wine.

So, in autumn 2025 we launched the Sodastream MIX machine as the solution for customers wishing to fizz more than just water.

What makes the MIX machine able to fizz other liquids?

The MIX machine has extra functionality with a bottle-locking dial that seals the bottle more tightly than our other machines. This controls the flow of CO2 into the machine, and allows you to slowly re-introduce air into the bottle once you have fizzed the liquid. It also has an overflow tank which collects any excess liquid, keeping your fizzing mess-free.

How to fizz with the MIX without it fizzing over?

To fizz liquids such as juice and prosecco in the Sodastream MIX without causing the liquid to fizz over, follow these steps:

  1. Fill the bottle (either large or mini) to the first wiggly line with your drink of choice
  2. Insert into the machine (push as far as it will go up, then push back)
  3. Turn the bottle locking dial on top of the machine all the way to the right (N.B. you won’t be able to push the carbonating button until this is done)
  4. Fizz around 2-3 times for the mini bottle, or 3-5 for the large bottle – you can adjust this to your desired level of fizz
  5. When ready, slowly release the bottle-locking dial by turning the dial to the left, step by step. When the fizzy drink is exposed to the air being released into the bottle, it is likely to start to fizz up. When this happens, simply tun the dial back to the right and wait for it to settle before continuing. It can take a little bit of patience but it’ll be worth it!
  6. When the dial is completely open, you can take your bottle back out of the machine the same way it went in.
  7. If your liquid did fizz up and you heard the machine making a suction noise as the fizz rose, be sure to remove the carbonation nozzle that’s attached to the overflow tank, empty it and give it a rinse so it doesn’t get sticky!

What happens if I fizz other liquids in Sodastream models that aren’t the MIX?

If you fizz juice, wine, or other liquids in a Sodastream model such as the TERRA, E-TERRA, ART, ENSO, DUO, or any of our older models, the liquid will fizz over, causing a mess. This can eventually break your machine as the carbonating nozzle is not designed to be exposed to liquids other than water and can void your machine warranty.
